How can I wash my PU Leather Jacket?

Similar to genuine leather, artificial leather can be smooth, shiny, soft, stiff, plastic-like or suede-like. Some types of artificial leather dry out and crack easily, while others are more sturdy.

Although some synthetic leathers are machine washable, most types are at least as delicate as real leather. Follow the instructions on the item's label if it has one; if it doesn't, play it safe, and only use cleaners designed for leather or synthetic leather.

If the item is particularly special to you, take it to a professional leather cleaner, just in case.

  1. Brush loose dirt off the item with a suede brush. Remove as much dirt as possible, then wipe the item with a dry cloth. When this is sufficient to clean the surface of the artificial leather, stop here.
  2. Dilute 1 teaspoon of mild leather shampoo in 2 cups of water. Immerse the cloth in the soapy liquid, then squeeze it out so it is thoroughly damp but not dripping. Blot and wipe any remaining dirt or stains on the item.
  3. Allow the item to air dry completely. Don't leave it in the sun or dry it with heat as this can damage the artificial leather.
  4. Apply a protective gel or leather conditioner to the item to prevent it from drying out or cracking. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to use the gel or conditioner most effectively.

  • Companies that manufacture leather care products often sell products formulated for artificial leather as well. Use these if you can find them; if not, products designed for real leather usually don't damage artificial leather.
